The Floods…
The Lord is really calling us to all… let go of the ordinary in order to receive excellency. He desires strongly to give us good gifts and sometimes the greatest obstacle is ourselves. Concerning our Master and Lord we do not think big enough at just what He not only desires to do in our lives but how He shall unfold His blessed desires to be woven into the tapestry of us. Our human understanding limits His performance in so many ways because we forget His ways are much higher than ours. To dream with God is breathtaking, the problem is… rarely do we take time to just be still and be in awe of His majesty that surrounds us.
It can be very frightening to consider forfeiting human love in exchange for fulfillment in His. Being willing to relinquish all counterfeit love that we can see, touch and feel exposes much of our frailties that give a false sense of security, revealing human tendencies of: fear, bitterness, resentment, pride and self-pity. Taking that leap is not for the faint hearted and I am so grateful Jesus keeps wooing us with His love, the only love that does not pull back or is used to control us.
I was thinking about how our lives sometimes resembles a flood… overwhelming, unexpected, destructive, uncontrollable and even a powerful force that seems to just do what it wants to do while we observe. In those times like no other, we must: focus on the promises of God we already know to be true, remember we are not our own having been bought with a very heavy price – the life of Jesus – which reveals just how priceless we are and that His love cannot be earned or bought, be mindful we already said “yes” to Him and where else would we even go considering we already are lost and hidden within a darkened vast world and lastly we need to entertain the “even if” moments in our lives brings clarity to us about us and if we are in sincerity truly sold out to Jesus or not.
Something else that crossed my mind in this chapter is how when we are approaching our Heavenly seats with Jesus, we can no longer simply fake it by relying on our own strength. It is in these times, that are perfectly designed to deplete our strength in that we rely only on His. I like to call this, “the real secret place.” Where we are totally decreased to nothing… He rises up within. In all actuality in these moments we realize we don’t need “us” and we don’t need “self” – we only need Him.
Lastly, He wanted me to remind us all of a beautiful scripture… John 17:17, which says… Sanctify them by your truth, you word is truth. We all know and hopefully believe His word is truth, that’s a given. But many times, we discount or minimize the crucial derivative of His Word is how we are actually sanctified. It’s pretty grieving to see how we try and try again to sanctify and make ourselves Holy at times. This word sanctify means to: separate from profane things, be a person dedicated to God, be cleansed both internally and externally, to rend one Holy having been cleansed from impure desires. Jesus prayed for us that the Father would sanctify us by His Word… and yet, very few even partake of His Word considering how sacred an act that truly is when we lay His Word to our hearts – seek to obey Him – it changes us. We used to try our best to clean the outside of the cup for others… but you want to know what gets the Lord’s attention? It is when we study to show ourselves approved only before HIM, not people so they are impressed by us or think we are sanctified by how many passages we can quote… but to whole heartedly lay His word to our hearts and be transformed by the renewing of our minds, sober, desiring the solidity found within His established Word, eternally sealed and approved by God Himself – for the right reasons only, not vain ones.
2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
This one just keeps coming up for us during this whole study doesn’t it? I am thankful for the reminder because often it is moment to moment we are having to believe Jesus has us during the next step we are going to take, having no eyes to see what threats lay before us or turmoil we might face.
Colossians 3:2
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
When we do this… we have joy, unspeakable and I often forget, only to end up in a heap of tears. Sometimes we just have to cry it out to see clearly, don’t we? We know after the tears are shed, where our hope comes from don’t we? From the Lord, so we look up to Him always and are lifted back up to stand on solid ground upon Him. It is impossible to not have the victory when the One Who is keeping you secure is Jesus. Everything on Earth shall pass away, but He never shall, nor do His spoken promises over our lives.
Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Many people misquote this Scripture by leaving off the beginning, saying the Lord is going to give me the desires of my heart – only to be let down and upset with Him when He delays or says no altogether for their desires to not come to pass because they do not align with His will for your life. In order to have your heart’s desire be granted, your heart must change to one that only desires Him and His will first and foremost… You eventually get to a place where if something is not His will for your life, it is not your desire to have it remain in your life or enter into your heart ever again.
Mathew 7:11
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Our Father stands guard continually over His children with a yes and a no, opening and closing doors as the gatekeeper to our lives when we are surrendered to Him fully. We must do our part in not overstepping Him, granting entrance to things He has not authorized to be present for our good. Here’s the good news… our Father only gives good gifts to us and He wants to give us more and more – we cannot even imagine all the good things He has planned and in store for us honestly, but where we fail is we try taking those things He did not design for us to fill the voids in our lives in place of what He is wanting to shower us with.
Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
I first just have to say, thank You Lord Jesus… this scripture could mean many things to many people, but to me it touches me so deeply I hardly have words to explain my heart of gratitude. Nothing can move us or shake us when we invite Jesus’s presence into our lives, He fills us to running over when we are content with Him.
Hebrews 12:26-27
…whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.
We get a little shaking every once in awhile and we need it… or we would all be caught off guard sleeping spiritually way to often, no doubt. Nothing calls you to attention quicker that a shaking going on in your life – remember all 10 virgins were asleep and shaken awake. Just because He shakes us does not guarantee the outcome will reflect the wise who enter into His rest in those moments. The Father shakes us, to wake us, to remove everything that should not have influence over our lives so that we let go and let God work to remove anything not of Him and let only that which is Holy and permissible remain. I find it so awe inspiring the Father watches over us to insure nothing impure lays a stronghold over us assigned by the enemy to kill, steal and destroy.
1 Samuel 15:22
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.
We all seem to look for ways to be pleasing unto the Lord, may we mindful of that which pleases Him the most is our obedience. Obedience overshadows our works even. Even though we are to lay our lives down for others, it is only pleasing to Him when we do so in a timely and orderly way when He gives the command for us to do so, otherwise even that work is done in vain.
Job 13:15
Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him.
We get the first part quite well… the rest of the story is how we quickly rise to attention to defend our own ways of doing things before Him. And when we do… He slays us in that we learn to not lean upon our own solutions and act accordingly but rather submit to Him so that He is the One orchestrating each step we take.
Mathew 7:25
…and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
In the same sense… we are a house, a dwelling place for the Lord on high… and no matter what floods or storms come, those who are secured grounded in Jesus as the rock of the home shall not fall. Not because of our strength, but in spite of it – for in our brokenness, He is made strong to hold us in tact no matter what comes our way.
John 4:14
…but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 7:38
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
Revelation 22:17
And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
Jeremiah 2:13
For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.
What is this water our souls so thirst for and something within us fights the urge to drink of it, so we resist? Water in these scriptures are an allegory that represents how we can be so very parched, dehydrated even to the point of demise and death and still reject receiving the life granted unto us by receiving and partaking of all He has to give to bring life and healing unto our perishing souls. Some drink from so many wells and yet are never fully quenched in thirst because they need living water – only that which Jesus can give fully satisfies and they are extremely discontented with their lives, out of them does not flow living water, but bitter. For those like the bride mentioned here in Revelation 22 – both the Holy Spirit and the bride of Christ in unison is saying to all who will listen… Come to Jesus, desire Him, take all He has to offer and live freely. Isn’t that just so beautiful?! Last thing on this… I was doing some research – Did you know every single living thing – plant, animal, the Earth, clouds, everything – needs water to be sustained? I could go on, but I won’t… sometimes I just marvel at how the Father holds everything together in such a precious way, including using water as the base for all life.
